Laugh At Rejected 'Judge Dredd' Costume by Gianni Versace

Back in 1995, when they were developing the first Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone, fashion designer Gianni Versace sent some sketches to the film production. Prop Bay put the scans online.

Prop Bay doesn't give a history, but gives these notes: "This concept was discarded and not used. On the back of one of the drawings is Versace stamp. This is one of the few non-fashion lines Versace did."

It's easy to look back in hindsight and laugh. So, I will.

Here's what the final costume did look like:
It's not hugely different, but they just look goofier for some reason.

Synopsis:
In a dystopian future, Dredd, the most famous judge (a cop with instant field judiciary powers) is convicted for a crime he did not commit while his murderous counterpart escapes. Director: Danny Cannon Writers: John Wagner (characters), Carlos Ezquerra (characters). Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Armand Assante and Rob Schneider

What do you think of the illustrations? Would the movie have hit with Versace's designs?

Storyboard Let's You Follow 'Dredd' (2012) On His Cycle

The upcoming film Dredd (2012), about a lawman of the future that is both judge, jury and executioner has released little concept art. However, a helpful reader garageman pointed me to South African artist Frederick Mpuuga (The Last King of Scotland) who has a sample storyboard on his blog.

Directed by Pete Travis, Dredd stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey.

It looks like an establishing shot of Judge Dredd on his motorcycle and it's called simply "Car chase". The description of the camerawork is very enlightening as it pans around the bridge.
A script was leaked online that is said to be the Dredd script. If so, this is a scene from the opening as the Judges approach the slums known as "Peach Trees".
Synopsis: When Judge Dredd arrives with rookie Cassandra Anderson to investigate a trio of murders at high-rise called slum Peach Trees, a drug lord puts Peach Trees on nuclear lockdown and the Judges are trapped inside, hunted by the entire populace. The Judges must choose between escaping the building, or ascending two-hundred stories to prove the drug lord guilty and execute her.

UPDATE: Jock's Concept Art for 'Dredd' (2012) Proves He Is the Law

Update: I've confirmed with the artist that while he did do concept art and design and a full break down of the script these pieces are done purely for his own enjoyment.

The upcoming remake of the 1995 film Judge Dredd, simply called Dredd, promises to look stunning.
Plot Summary: In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality altering drug, SLO-MO.
The concept artist known simply as Jock has created some bold images with broad strokes of color and atmospheric tones.
