Plug Into 'The Matrix Revolutions' Concept Art By Simon Murton

My interview with Jerad S. Marantz has been postponed for a day or two, but I wanted to share some astounding artwork by an artist named Simon Murton for The Matrix Revolutions (2003).

He's worked on tons of films like Judge Dredd, Stargate and King Kong Lives, but some of my favorite work is from The Matrix. Murton really captures the gritty feel of the hovercraft.

Check them out after the jump. Click on the images to enlarge them.

You could spend hours looking at all the details in these illustrations.

Official Synopsis:
Shot back-to-back with The Matrix Reloaded, the third and final installment of Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski's sci-fi action saga picks up where the second film left off. Neo (Keanu Reeves) remains unconscious in the real world, caught in a mysterious subway station that lies between the machine world and the Matrix, and Bane (Ian Bliss) is still a conduit for Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), who continues to grow out of control, threatening to destroy both worlds. Meanwhile, as the sentinels get closer and closer to Zion, the citizens of the earth's last inhabited city prepare for the inevitable onslaught. By bargaining with The Merovingian (Lambert Wilson), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) are able to free Neo who, after meeting with The Oracle (Mary Alice stepping in for the late Gloria Foster), decides that he must leave Zion and head for the machine mainframe. As Neo and Trinity venture into the dangerous machine world, with hopes of stopping both the machines and Agent Smith, their comrades in Zion attempt to fight off the attacking sentinels with the odds stacked greatly against them. Other cast members returning include Monica Bellucci, Ngai Sing, and Harold Perrineau Jr.

What do you think of the illustrations? How would you like to pilot one of these ships?

George Hull Shows off His Concept Art for Speed Racer [Video]

CGSociety has a great interview with George Hull (The Island, V for Vendetta, The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions, Speed Racer) talking about his decision to leave his career path as an industrial designer to pursue his dream of becoming a concept artist.

He left the huge special effects company Industrial Light and Magic to work with the Wachowski brothers. George Hull himself is a pretty laid back guy.

The video has some amazing concept art for Speed Racer and Matrix though, so its worth checking out.

Take A Ride In the Secret Avengers Heli-Carrier

Concept art, reportedly from the Marvel comics 2012 Avengers movie, has surfaced and it looks pretty cool.
The Indian artist George Hull, who also worked on the Matrix sequels, is credited with the designs.

The Heli-Carrier in the comics is a flying aircraft carrier built by Tony Stark and serves as the mobile base of operations for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Here's the original post translated from Russian:
Before the movie "The Avengers" ("The Avengers") still far away, but already we can now look at concept art of the famous USS Sch.ITa (SHIELD Helicarrier) by artist George Hull (George Hull).

It was the supposed originally to appear in the Film "Iron Man 2" ("Iron Man 2"), but over time things have changed and the idea shelved for later.

Probability of occurrence of an Aircraft carrier in the new movie Joss Whedon (Joss Whedon) is very high, Given that representatives of Marvel Studios and Kevin Faig (Kevin Feige) want to make a big surprise for everyone and build up an Aircraft carrier to the top Comic-Kona to San Diego (San Diego Comic-Con 2011). [sic]

None of this is confirmed of course, and Hull isn't even listed as one of the artists on the film. So, this is probably bogus, but you never know. IMDB has been wrong before.

For reference, here are the artists listed.
  • Darrin Denlinger     ....     storyboard artist
  • Michael Meyers     ....     concept artist
  • Candice Muriedas    ....     art department coordinator: Los Angeles
  • Raj Rihal    ....     concept artist
  • Phil Saunders    ....     concept artist

Are These Concept Sketches from THE MATRIX Too Detailed?

The concept sketches from The Matrix by Geofrey "Geof" Darrow are beautiful, but almost too detailed. You can barely make out what the robots are made of.  It would have been impossible to create them on-screen, but at least they can provided a framework. Sometimes, concept designers can go nuts with the design I guess.

Neo gets pulled out of his pod by one of the "Docbot" robot caretakers.

A nice view of the inside of the hovership "Nebuchadnezzar" and the "bug probe" that removes the robot from Neo's bellybutton.

The design for the robot ""Squiddies" or "Sentinels."

Born October 21, 1955) Darrow is a comic artist and designer born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. He is known for having an extremely high level of detail in his work. He's worked on everything from the 80s show Superfriends to movies like Speed Racer and a ton of comic books.
